  1. Great recipe! I used 1 c. of maple syrup instead of brown sugar and it was delicious. We had it for Christmas breakfast! Thank you for sharing!

  2. This was delicious! I made it for my family for a christmas morning treat. I used italian loaf and didn't use all of it. Maybe 3/4's. next time for 4-5 people I will half the recipe. Thanks for posting!

  3. This is a great way to serve up breakfast! I, too, used a dark bread (actually a nutty, multi-grain bread), & it went extremely well with the apples & cranberries! I'll certainly be making this another time, possibly with some other dried fruits! Thanks for sharing a great recipe! [Tagged, made & reviewed for the Summer Salad & Berry Recipe Challange]

  4. Deeeliciooousss! I used homemade whole wheat bread, (partly because that's what I had, and partly to justify having this for dinner!) and made a single serving with two thick-cut slices, baked for the same amount of time. Turned out great, thanks for the recipe! I wonder if other fruits will work this well....

  5. Very good. I added pecans along with the apples and cranberrys, and a little brown sugar and cinnamon on top.

FAQs

Should French toast have more eggs or milk? ›

Whatever you decide on, the ratio of liquid to egg will still be about ¼ cup liquid to one egg, and one egg per two slices of bread. So, if you want to make four slices of French toast, you would need four slices of bread, two eggs, and ½ cup milk. How's that for an easy recipe?

How do you keep French toast from falling apart? ›

Dry Bread Is Your Friend

The original point of French toast or pain perdu was to use up leftover bread. It was, in essence, no longer “lost bread,” but found in its new purpose. The bread should be dried out, without any doubt. Dry bread helps the eggs soak in without the entire piece collapsing.

Is 4 eggs on toast too much? ›

For most healthy adults, it's safe to eat 1–2 eggs a day depending on how much other cholesterol is in your diet. If you already have high cholesterol or other risk factors for heart disease, it may be best to eat no more than 4–5 eggs per week.

Why add milk in French toast? ›

Why add milk to eggs for French toast? French toast needs liquid to soften the bread, as well as something to 'bind' the ingredients. The milk is part of the batter or custard for soaking the bread slices--whole milk and eggs are the key ingredients for a rich custard.

Why does my French toast taste too eggy? ›

If the balance is off and you include too many eggs or not enough milk, the finished French toast will have a scrambled egg-like flavor. When scaling this recipe up or down, keep in mind that you need 1/4 cup of milk for every egg.

What does adding more eggs to bread do? ›

It makes the bread lighter and fluffier. The reason for that is the fat in the yolk that inhibits gluten formation just as any other fat would. This results in a looser dough that can expand and puff up more.
