Here's the main keys you need to know about the Google leak (Tl;Dr)πππ------------------------------1οΈβ£ Google has confirmed the leak!π They claim the content is real, but is missing context. π They caution that the information may be out of date, incomplete, or out of context. π‘ They are doing their best to cover their a*ses, but can't deny it's real. ------------------------------2οΈβ£ Google definitely uses your click data to rank contentπ It's called NavBoostπ Click-thru rate matters π Pogo-sticking matters π "long clicks" matterπ‘ Your title tags need to be AWESOME for a high CTR.π‘ Your content must satisfy the intent of the keyword to prevent PS'ingπ‘ Your content and UX need to keep readers on the page. ------------------------------3οΈβ£ Google uses Chrome behavioral dataπ How you interact with websites on Chrome feeds the algorithmπ More visits to specific pages results in higher rankingsπ‘ It's a bit scary, and there is nothing you can do to influence this ------------------------------4οΈβ£ Google has their own version of Domain Authority when comparing sitesπ It's called "Site Authority." π They said nothing like this exists. It does. π‘ We don't know how it functions (and may never). ------------------------------5οΈβ£ New sites are in a "sandbox" before they start rankingπ Domain age DOES matter. π This is why new sites take awhile to start rankingπ‘ Expect your new site to be buried until it gets out of the sandbox------------------------------6οΈβ£ Authorship matters! π Google said this wasn't a factor, it definitely is. π Google stores information about specific authors. π‘ Make sure you're using authors, and it's in the entity of the page. ------------------------------7οΈβ£ Google understands A LOT about link velocityπ Google measures "link velocity" to specific pages (recency and volume).π‘ If you're getting a link spam attack (or building illegitimate links), G knows. ------------------------------8οΈβ£ Recency and dates matter (a lot!)π Google puts a lot of stock into fresh content. π Only 20 versions of a page are stored (you can't reoptimize endlessly). π G is looking for consistency across metadata, URLs, on-page dates. π‘ Re-optimize your content, but don't just move a few things around. π‘ There is a finite limit to your gains. ------------------------------9οΈβ£ Short content is scored on "originality." π Writing from an experiential point of view is ideal. π Writing content based on other people's research is worthless. π‘ I've been saying this for months: Have an opinion and experience! ------------------------------π Small personal sites are flagged π There is no definition of what this means.π It's likely a demotion rather than promotion.π‘ Continually grow your site and get out of this categoryI'll keep you updated as this scene develops!

So....when Google told you to eat rocks...And put industrial glue on your pizza...That was YOUR fault π€£ It was either a dumb search, or you faked it. Search better, people!

At this point, should we say that AI Overviews has been a letdown? So far, here are some of the absolute GEMS Google has provided π---------------------------------------------------------π Adding industrial glue to pizza to prevent cheese slippageβοΈ Running with scissors for exercise and "improving pores." π Bathing with a plugged-in toaster to unwind and wash away stressπ Recommends using your birthday & name for strong passwordsπ· Recommended mint and high fiber foods as home remedies for appendicitis π Recommends eating small rocks every day as part of a balanced diet π£ A list of the benefits of nuclear war ...and my ultimate favorite: drinking urine (at least 2 liters per day) to pass kidney stones. Does this mean AI Overviews is a failure (or that it will even be abandoned)? No.And it's probably here to stay. But it is RIFE with problems. And what we are looking at today is likely very different from the version(s) we will see in the future. So let's not get overly excited just yet...But definitely don't eat any rocks while you wait.

π SEO isn't a goal! β It's not a RESULT you should be looking for...let me explainπ--------------------------------SEO should be thought of in terms of a CHANNELThink of SEO as a new highway that brings people to your store...It creates foot traffic that didn't otherwise exist before...And...an opportunity for potential customers to π your brand. But SEO doesn't generate on its own π°SEO creates an OPPORTUNITY to generate π°This is where most SEO experts get lost...This is the part where marketing channels need to start WORKING TOGETHER π€It's about matching the appropriate NEXT STEP with the type of traffic you're driving to the site. -----------------------------------------Let's talk about pairing email marketing w/SEO, as an example...My client drives TONS of SEO traffic to the site...85% of all site traffic, as a matter of fact. But it's almost all informational intent traffic......and there was no next step paired with the channel. So visitors would consume content, then leave...So we added an email opt-in along with a regular newsletter. Say what you want about newsletter popups. I get it!But it increased conversions by 550% OVERNIGHT!Now their SEO activities FUEL an email nurture program. That's a difference of ~250 new subscribers and ~1,500 new subscribers being nurtured each week!--------------------------------SEO is a GREAT tool...but you should also consider how it plays along with your: π Email marketingπ Conversion CTA optionsπ UXπ Video marketingπ Podcast marketingAnd EVERYTHING else you do as a marketer!

Really, REALLY struggling to understand how SGE isn't just Featured Snippets 2.0It's not EXACTLY plagiarism...But it DEFINITELY reminds of writing a 5th grade research report. "I'll move a few words around, that makes it mine!" Unfortunately for scandiweb, some content creator worked their butt off just to be quasi-plagiarized.

β How to write for SEO in a way that will generate results in 2024, a guide. πππTl;Dr, Rehashed ideas ideas, whether from ChatGPT or human writers, is DEAD. Experiential, original thoughts are the ONLY way forward. -----------------------------------1οΈβ£ Create experiential content β Write on topics that YOU are an expert in. β Use expressions like, "In my experience, I would recommend." Or, "Watch out for X problem because in the past I've seen Y." β Have a strong opinion on the topic and weave it into the content.β Have a conversational/personable tone and voice. β If you have to use existing content on the web for inspiration, you might not be creating "expert" content. β Quoting other experts is NOT experiential content ------------------------------------ 2οΈβ£ Be judicious about how you use TF-IDF toolsβ Use these tools to help round out a thorough piece of content. β Use the topic suggestions as inspiration to further your point. β Don't omit experiential writing for the sake of hitting high scores!------------------------------------ 3οΈβ£ Use ChatGPT sparingly (mostly just don't use it unless you have to). β Use it to help build a framework for your article if you're struggling. β Use it to learn more about your target audience: What kinds of questions are they asking? What are their pain points? β Do NOT, under any circ*mstances, copy/paste content from ChatGPTβ Don't take more inspiration from ChatGPT than your own experience. ------------------------------------4οΈβ£ Address the intent of the keyword succinctlyβ Understand the intent of the keyword by thoroughly investigating SERPs BEFORE writing your piece. β Make sure the intent of search is addressed immediately, at the beginning of the content. β If it's an informational intent question, answer it in one or two sentences at the top of the page. β Do not confuse commercial intent with informational intent. That includes mismatching conversion CTAs. β Don't take forever to get to the point of the keyword's intent. ------------------------------------5οΈβ£ Replace word count with qualityβ Focus on writing an amazing piece of content - cut ALL the fluff. β If you can fully address the intent of the keyword in 400 words, do it. There is no rule for how long a piece of content needs to be. β There's no correlation between content length and keyword performance. Don't write to hit a specific word count------------------------------------Note: A year ago we did an SEO experiment of creating an entire site (mezcal niche) on ChatGPT content. It grew quickly, then flatlined. We are now re-writing the content with experts to regain/hold our rankings. ποΈ Book me if you want to talk SEO!

"Email marketing has a 37-to-1 return on investment!".... Have you seen this BS number floating around? Wouldn't EVERY ONE OF US be millionaires if that were true? I can't think of a better investment strategy. But like most pro-marketing "studies"...it's pretty much crap. Let me explain why... Look at the chart below... The data show the total clicks and click-through rate for a monthly newsletter my client sends out at the beginning of every month. The layout/UX didn't change over the sample size. The types of content promoted didn't change. Yet one month can generate double (or half) the number of clicks as another month. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!Better copy. Plain and simple. The number of clicks, the volume of conversions, the amount of revenue generated...all hinge on how strong your copy is. Email copy is HARD. TO. WRITE. I've written email sales copy that got crickets one week, and generated tens of thousands the next week. The language you use has to be precise, interesting, BRIEF, and conversational/familiar. So yeah, email marketing can be an outstanding channel. But it's not automatic. It only works when you have a really, really good email content writer.

My Voices of Search podcast with Jordan Koene was just re-released today (link in comments). Here's the hill I'm going to π on...USER INTERACTION SIGNALS!Somehow people are still missing this trick. Here's my hot take: π₯ They matter more than linksπ₯ They matter more than hitting content scoresπ₯ They matter more than keywords Why do they matter so much?Because EVERYTHING you do impacts them:Your UXYour title tagsYour readabilityYour content qualityYour user experienceYour page load speed Your use (or lack of) mediaThe annoying ads on your pageHow quickly you satisfy the intent How well you understand searcher intentHow well you've created experiential contentCreating content for SEO isn't π science...It's hard work. That's why people don't do it. That's why copy/paste ChatGPT 3.5 content is getting murdered. That's why content creators will be fine. High performance SHOULD be hard.

π 4 fully-remote, awesome companies hiring right nowπBut, Jeff...why would you share just 4 companies when there are THOUSANDS posted on job boards daily?Give me 30 seconds to preface these "job listings" you see everywhere...Job boards are the wild wild west right now π΄ πΏThere is ZERO regulation to how companies post these jobs. I'll elaborate:π 1/3 to 1/2 of job listings are FAKE. They're used by recruiters to harvest data.π "Remote" usually doesn't mean FULLY REMOTE. It usually means, "from home." Wanna travel? Forget about it. π The companies can be dodgy AF. What's their Glassdoor rating? Do they have a truly remote culture? Do they TRUST THEIR EMPLOYEES, or do they treat them like children and micromanage them. π§ We explain in our most recent podcast episode you can sort through all these crap listings (episode link in the comments) to find the diamonds in the rough. And...the highlights of the week are: 1οΈβ£ Yoko Consulting - Digital creative agencyWhat we like: π Fully-transparent hiring process listed, step-by-step on careers page.π Remote policy: "You donβt have to worry about a commute, nor will you be tied to a specific location."πTrust in employees: "Weβre not micro-managers and no one will be looking over your shoulder to make sure you do your job."Our take: An excellent opportunity to expose yourself to MANY facets of marketing and tech, while working fully remote for a company that trusts you. -------------------------------------------------------2οΈβ£ TestGorilla - Talent assessment What we like: π Remote policy: Careers page headline: "Join us, from anywhere."π Remote culture: Careers page maps out the locations of "154 team members working from 43 different countries."π Trust in employees: "With our 100% remote structure, you'll have the support, freedom, and trust you deserve to truly grow and succeed." Our take: Some of the most personable and relatable language towards candidates we have seen on a website. This is the attitude that will attract top talent. -------------------------------------------------------3οΈβ£ Invisible - Business consulting What we like: π Remote culture embodiment: "Work anywhere, change everything.Dive into a world where groundbreaking innovation meets the freedom of remote work."π Transparent pay structure/salary on job listingsπ Happy employees: 4.0 review on Glassdoor. Our take: Strong fit for entrepreneurial-spirited professionals who want the latitude to truly "own" their position and make their mark on the company.-------------------------------------------------------4οΈβ£ CopilotIQ - Healthcare What we like: π Remote policy: "100% Remote. Live and work from anywhere."π Rare opportunity in this field: We don't run into many remote-first cultures within this vertical. π An exciting field that bridges the gap between healthcare and technology. Our take: Rare, remote opportunity in the healthcare space.
