Sweet Home Season 3’s Ending Confirmation Makes Me Even More Excited About Song Kang’s K-Drama Future (2024)

Summary

  • Song Kang can explore more roles now that Sweet Home is ending with season 3, marking the completion of a significant project.
  • Hyun-su, played by Song Kang, is a standout character in Sweet Home, serving as the heart and soul of the series.
  • Expect Hyun-su to face moral dilemmas and inner demons in Sweet Home's final season, shaping the outcome of the war between humans and monsters.

Sweet Home is ending with season 3, and while I’ll miss Cha Hyun-su, this makes me even more excited about Song Kang’s future K-drama roles. Sweet Home season 3 was confirmed over three years ago when the Netflix original K-drama was renewed for two more seasons following its successful debut. Presumably, Sweet Home’s final two seasons were shot back to back, with the third one releasing less than a year after the second. More recently, Netflix confirmed that Sweet Home season 3 will be the show’s last.

Sweet Home ending with season 3 is good news for the series, whose second season left a lot to be desired. Despite its flaws, Sweet Home’s long-awaited return expanded the scope of the show and introduced several storylines that will now be paid off in its grand finale. The stakes are high for Sweet Home’s third chapter, especially regarding how the story of Song Kang’s Cha Hyun-su will end. Between Ui-myeong’s plan for the neo-humans and the fate of Yi-kyung’s daughter, I expect Hyun-su to be front and center in Sweet Home’s final season.

Sweet Home Ending With Season 3 Means Song Kang Can Explore Even More Roles In The Future

Sweet Home is arguably the biggest production Song Kang has starred in since the start of his career in 2017. One of the most popular Netflix K-dramas, Sweet Home was the first Korean show to enter the streamer’s Global Top 10. With a significant budget, a large cast, and huge set pieces, every episode of Sweet Home almost feels like a blockbuster movie. Therefore, it is safe to assume that filming all three seasons of the show took Song Kang quite some time. Now that Sweet Home is ending, the star will presumably have more time to tackle other roles.

Interestingly, Song Kang starred in three shows between Sweet Home’s seasons 1 and 2, which puts in perspective how long it took for the series to return. Most of my favorite Song Kang K-dramas were released between the first and second seasons of Sweet Home. This includes Navillera, Nevertheless, Forecasting Love and Weather, and My Demon, the last of which premiered around the same time as Sweet Home season 2 arrived on Netflix. With such compelling career choices during Sweet Home’s hiatus, I’m excited to see what Song Kang will do now that the Netflix web series is over.

Cha Hyun-su Will Always Be One Of Song Kang’s Best Characters

Sweet Home was Netflix’s first major K-drama hit

Song Kang has played his fair share of iconic characters already, even though his character as a leading man started not so long ago in 2019. Hwang Sun-oh from Love Alarm, Lee Chae-rok from Navillera, Park Jae-eon from Nevertheless, and Lee Shi-woo from Forecasting Love and Weather are all great characters that proved Song had what it took to lead major K-dramas. More recently, My Demon’s Jeong Gu-won became a fan-favorite among not just fans of the actor but K-drama audiences in general. As much as I like all of those characters, Cha Hyun-su may be Song Kang’s most iconic.

Although I enjoyed Sweet Home’s second season, Hyun-su’s absence did not go unnoticed.

A tragic hero, Hyun-su is the heart and soul of Sweet Home. Although the cast of Sweet Home is quite large and includes a lot of great actors, the show only works because Hyun-su is compelling enough as a main character. It is no surprise that Sweet Home season 2, during which Hyun-su was nowhere to be seen for several episodes, was not as well received as the first one. Although I enjoyed Sweet Home’s second season, Hyun-su’s absence did not go unnoticed. It’s unclear why Song Kang was barely in Sweet Home season 2, but fortunately, Hyun-su is back.

What To Expect From Song Kang’s Hyun-su In Sweet Home’s Final Season

Hyun-su has to step up in Sweet Home season 3

Sweet Home season 2’s final episodes saw the return of Cha Hyun-su, who had spent almost a year living out in the open away from his friends. During his “exile,” Hyun-su learned that the monster apocalypse is more complicated than he thought. Song Kang’s character concluded that monsters deserved to live as much as any human and that these creatures should not be attacked just for existing. This creates an interesting moral dilemma that Hyun-su will have to face in Sweet Home season 3. His choice may be what defines the outcome of the inevitable war between humans and monsters.

Sweet Home season 3’s latest update confirms one exciting thing about Song Kang’s Cha Hyun-su ahead of the Netflix horror K-drama’s conclusion.

There is also the matter of Ui-myeong, whose real identity was revealed in Sweet Home season 2’s finale. The villain believes that neo-humans are the next step of evolution and must take over the planet, a vision with which Hyun-su does not agree despite his wish to protect monsters. Additionally, Hyun-su has to face his own demons, both metaphorically and literally. The monster side of Hyun-su took over the character’s body in the season 2 finale, meaning that Sweet Home’s hero will be very unpredictable at the beginning of season 3.
